Friday night's game was an explosive, high scoring, back and forth game with three lead changes and no team ever being up by more than two goals throughout the entire game. The Blugolds started the game out with leading scorer Austin King putting one in the back of the net early in the first period. With that being the only goal of the period it looked as if the game might be a low scoring, defensive game, but the second period showed otherwise. Platteville came out strong and scored in the first minute of the second, followed by another goal to take the lead a few minutes later. Eau Claire was up to the challenge and after a slow start managed to stop the growing momentum with a power play goal by captain Dillon Barmore with assists coming from Tyler Liddicoat and Jon Roessler. After tying the game 2-2 Barmore brought the Blugolds ahead half-way through the period on yet another power play goal. Platteville answered with a goal of their own and after freshman Sam Fisher netted his first goal off a deflection in front of the net, Platteville answered yet again to keep the game tied. However, with only 47 seconds left in the 2nd period sophomore Bob Erickson recorded his first goal of the season to regain the lead, and the Blugolds never looked back. With two more goals coming Nick Jirele and Roessler, and one more from Platteville, UWEC walked away with the 7-5 victory marking the first win of the season.
After such a high scoring game on Friday night, one would anticipate a similar outcome from Saturday night. However, both teams played better defensively and it made for a low scoring nail bitter. The Blugolds must have felt pretty good after their win on Friday night, too good in fact as they came out slow and flat footed in the first period allowing Platteville to score two goals in the first five minutes. Due to an amazing performance by freshman goaltender Ryan Laughlin, the Blugolds still had a chance to come back. After a scoreless 2nd period, the Blugolds finally struck the back of the net on the power play when Sophomore Dan Micaelson ripped a slap shot by Platteville's Jason Cebulski halfway through the 3rd. Despite a valiant effort at mounting a comeback the Blugolds failed to find the equalizer and fell to the Pioneers 2-1 to split the weekend.
