The UWEC Men’s Club Hockey team got back on the ice for the
first time of the year during the Blugold Invitational. Game one was against
Saint Mary’s University Club team. St. Mary’s came out flying in the first
getting on top two goals to one but defenseman Matt Stover would find the twine
from the high slot late in the first. The Blugolds kept battling in the second
and after two the score was all knotted up at three to three. In the third the
Blugolds poured it on with Jon Roessler getting his second of the game, Andy
Mlynar, Tyler Liddicoat and Ben Boldenow all getting on the board. The Blugolds
started the season off right with a seven to five victory over a very
competitive St. Mary’s squad.
The second game of the Invitational was
directly following the win against St. Mary’s. A fresh UW Superior team took the
ice against the Blugolds. The Blugolds struggled in the defensive zone and
allowed Superior to take a six to two lead in the first. The Blugolds wouldn’t
go down without a fight and played much better in the second making the score
four to six after two. Despite a hat-trick by Jon Roessler the Blugolds were
unable to mount the comeback and Superior got an empty netter to beat the
Blugolds eight to five.
The final game of the Invitational was the next day
against Michigan Tech. The Blugolds came out flying and got up early and often
with goals from Ben Griswold, Nick Adams and Dillon Barmore. The Blugolds lead
three to one after the first. In the second it was more of the same as the
defenseman got in on the action. Dan Michaelson, and Alex Zitske added two more
making the lead five to one. After that it was Michigan. The Blugolds imploded
and got outscored six to one in the second half of the game losing the game six
to seven in overtime.
